About

UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES

Founded in 1950, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), “is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people.” The organization was formed to help the millions of Europeans displaced after World War II, and now continues to aid refugees around the world. An estimated 50 million have been aided by the UNHCR, which has been honored with two Nobel Peace Prizes. In the current day, internal displacement, stateless people, and major refugee crises are at the center of the High Commissioners agenda. With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and offices in 128 countries, the UNHCR works to provide critical emergency assistance, aid to return home, and income generating projects for refugees. Another goal of the UNHCR is to “ensure the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to eventually return home, integrate or resettle.” With global refugee crises growing in size and impact, the UNHCR is adopting an increasingly larger role on the world stage and is working to address some of the largest humanitarian issues we face today.

Eashan Mathur

Assistant Director

Eashan is a senior at Interlake High School and an IB diploma candidate. Having joined MUN in his freshman year, he has loved every single part about the MUN experience. Unlike traditional delegates, his first committee was a crisis committee, and he has since been addicted to every aspect about them. Eashan has attended six conferences, and this will be his first time staffing. Apart from MUN, Eashan plays tennis, volunteers at the Pacific Science Center as a public representative, designs solar panels for homeless shelters in Seattle and Tijuana, and is a co-founder of Science For Community, which hosts science competitions for younger students. He is extremely excited to have a great inaugural year of SeattleMUN and for a weekend of fast-paced debate!
