About

UNION FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN

Founded on July 13, 2008 at the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean, The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an intergovernmental organization uniting the 28 countries of the European Union and 15 countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. The UfM was created with the mission to transform the Mediterranean into an area of cooperation, peace, democracy, and prosperity through political dialogue and the implementation of projects and initiatives. The UfM has three main goals: integration, human development, and stability. Today, it works to enhance regional stability by focusing on six main fields: Business Development and Employment; Higher Education and Research; Social and Civil Affairs; Water, Environment, and Blue Economy; Transport and Urban Development; and Energy and Climate Action. The UfM strongly believes that there can be no security without development, as both are crucial to addressing the current causes of security issues and socio-economic instability within the region.

Freya Gulamali is a sophomore at Interlake High School. She first fell in love with MUN during the chaos of PACMUN’s midnight crisis, and she continues to love MUN because of the inspiring diplomacy of delegates who passionately work towards a common goal of forming creative, practical, and effective resolutions. Outside of MUN, Freya enjoys playing the cello, fretting about IB, and crafting masterworks of abstract art. Freya can’t wait to meet all of you at the first committee session, and welcomes you to the Union for the Mediterranean!
